Después de que Jesús murió, sus amigos se fueron yendo de Jerusalén. Dos de ellos caminaban, muy tristes, hacia un pueblo que se llamaba Emaús. Iban charlando y hablando de todo lo que había ocurrido. Entonces apareció un hombre que se juntó a ellos, y empezaron a conversar. El que había llegado era Jesús, pero ellos no se daban cuenta.
«¿De qué habláis?» –les preguntó–.
Ellos le contaron que su amigo Jesús había muerto asesinado por las autoridades y lo disgustados que estaban. Pero él les dijo que no fueran tan ciegos. «¿No veis que las profecías antiguas ya decían que el Hijo de Dios sufriría mucho, pero que no sería derrotado?» Y así siguieron, caminando, y charlando.
Al llegar al pueblo, los amigos de Jesús invitaron al peregrino a quedarse con ellos a cenar. Él aceptó. Y cuando estaban empezando a cenar, agarró un trozo de pan y lo partió con las mismas palabras de la última cena. Entonces por fin se dieron cuenta de que era Jesús. Pero cuando quisieron abrazarlo, ya había desaparecido. Tenían el corazón lleno de alegría, y volvieron todo el camino hasta Jerusalén, corriendo, para contarles a los demás que lo habían visto y que estaba vivo.
