Se presentaron algunos a informar a Jesús acerca de unos galileos cuya sangre había mezclado Pilato con la de sus sacrificios. Él contestó: «¿Pensáis que aquellos galileos, dado que sufrieron aquello, eran más pecadores que los demás galileos? Os digo que no; pero si no os arrepentís, acabaréis como ellos. O aquellos dieciocho sobre los cuales se derrumbó la torre de Siloé y los mató, ¿pensáis que eran más culpables que el resto de los habitantes de Jerusalén? Os digo que no; pero si no os arrepentís acabaréis como ellos».
Y les propuso la siguiente parábola: «Un hombre tenía una higuera plantada en su huerto. Fue a buscar fruto en ella y no lo encontró. Dijo al hortelano: ‘Llevo tres años viniendo a buscar fruta en esta higuera y no la hallo. Córtala, que encima está esquilmando el terreno’. Él le contestó: ‘Señor, déjala todavía este año; cavaré alrededor y la abonaré, a ver si da fruto. Si no, la cortas el año que viene’».
